I’m Red, a proud Brummie and the producer of our short film, ‘A Glass House’. The film centres on Robin, a young woman dealing with a significant struggle, and how Marcus, an unexpected visitor, forces her to overcome that grief. When I first read the script for A Glass House, I was taken aback by how closely the story reflected an event that happened within my own family. When my grandfather passed, his father visited my nan, consoling her in her grief whilst dealing with his own. A tragedy in a family is a difficult thing, but I feel that for a mixed-heritage family, someone’s passing can be even more confusing to process.
We wanted the film to explore how two people from different cultural backgrounds can experience the same thing, and how difficult it can be for people who have assimilated into the British way of life to express themselves and their feelings. Knowing what my grandparents and great-grandparents had to go through, it’s now so important for me to help spread representation of both my Irish and Jamaican roots.
I hope everyone who watches the film takes away a sense of hope with them. That, even though we are in the hardest of times, things will get better if we look out for one another.
